Students wanting to major in music must show a passionate desire to play, teach, or be involved with music at some professional level. Students must have significant background from their high school situations in performance, private lessons, and music theory fundamentals and be extremely aware of the commitment and rigors of being in a college music program.

Performance classes include individual lessons in instrumental and vocal music, small ensembles, concert band, jazz band, concert choir and show choir. Other music classes include music theory, ear training and sight singing, and music history. (Computer and synthesizer use is included as part of the theory and ear training curriculum.) Students also are encouraged to learn to play secondary instruments by enrolling in individual lessons.
Any student interested in singing may audition for the Concert Choir, which is featured throughout the year at concerts held on campus and is a vital part of the music department. The student needs to set up an audition time with the director.
