Journey Catlett named March Student of the Month

Displaying a charming attitude toward others, outstanding citizenship, and character, Cowley College sophomore Journey Catlett was recently named Cowley College’s March Student of the Month.

The STEM major is the daughter of Link and Melody Fannon of Wasilla, AK. She has two brothers, Levi, 17, and Axel, 15. She also has a sister, Tesla 9. Grandparents are Rick and Debbie Johnson of Melba, Idaho.

Journey attended high school in Wasilla, Alaska, before moving on to Melba High School in Melba, Idaho. At Melba High School, she served as Student Body president and manager of the football team.

Having gotten married after high school, Journey followed her husband, Demetri Catlett, to Cowley County, where he was to attend Southwestern College and play soccer for the Moundbuilders. Catlett decided to enroll at Cowley College, sight unseen.

“I never even looked up Cowley, but it has turned out amazing,” Catlett said.

At Cowley, she has a grade point average of 3.67. She is the president of the Math & Science Club, vice president of the Student Senate, PTK vice president of membership and fellowship, Collegiate Quiz Bowl team member, and Hope Squad member.

“I did not know what to expect at Cowley, so I was not very involved during my first year at the school,” Catlett said. “I decided it would be great to be more involved again, such as when I was the Student Body president in high school, and from that, it just took off.”

Catlett is well-respected around the main campus in Arkansas City by faculty, staff, and students.

“I believe Journey is a good candidate for Student of the Month because she exceeds the criteria needed for this nomination,” said Paige Toon, Natural Science Department Academic Department Specialist.

After Cowley, Catlett and her husband, Demetri, plan to transfer to Utah Tech University in St. George, UT.

“Utah Tech will not cost a lot, plus it has a lot of student life events and is big on the community like Cowley is,” Catlett said.

Catlett was shocked and humbled to be named the March Student of the Month.

“I am honored to have helped make an impact at Cowley and to be named the Student of the Month,” Catlett said. “Cowley has been one of the best experiences in my life. I have met so many amazing people. The school feels like one big family.”

Catlett previously shadowed in the Radiology department at South Central Kansas Health. However, looking ahead, she is excited to start a family.

“I want to be a mom and raise a family because my mom (Melody) made such an impact on me,” Catlett said.
