Mbengue stands out as top student for month of October

Ndack Mbengue

Cowley College sophomore Ndack Mbengue has made her presence felt on the college’s main campus in Arkansas City. The 6’3 basketball player from Bergamo, Italy, is easily recognizable due to her height, but the well-liked sophomore is showing she is much more than just an impressive basketball player, she is also a dedicated student as shown by her being named the Cowley College October Student of the Month.

Mbengue came to Cowley in November 2022, as she was a late addition to the Lady Tiger basketball team. Before attending Cowley, she graduated from Birmingham Metropolitan College in England.

Her parents are Awa Niang and Ibrahim Mbengue (deceased). She has a brother, Fallou Mbengue.

She started eight games as a freshman at Cowley and averaged 4.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest and is expected to take on a larger role as a sophomore after spending the summer playing with the European national team.

Along with basketball, the business administration major is a member of the International Student Organization, a tutor in The Learning Center, a resident assistant in the Docking Dorm, and a finalist for Queen Alalah XCI.

“It has been busy, but also so nice to experience Arkalalah as a finalist for Queen Alalah,” Mbengue said.

Despite her hectic schedule, she has accumulated a 3.91 grade point average during her time at Cowley.

“Ndack consistently excels in her studies, achieves high grades, and demonstrates a strong commitment to her education,” assistant athletic director for academics and compliance Stephanye Edwards said. “In the face of challenges, she always maintains a positive attitude. Ndack is always kind and generous which has such a positive impact on others.”

Mbengue hopes to have a big sophomore season on the basketball court and parlay that into playing basketball at the NCAA Division I level. However, before she leaves she wants to enjoy her final year at Cowley College.

“It feels so good to know I am appreciated around here,” Mbengue said. “I am very grateful to know that a member of the staff nominated me. The instructors here are really helpful.”
