Community Education offerings at Cowley College

Cowley College is offering several exciting courses through its Workforce and Community Education Center. Bits & Bites: Tech Talk for Everyone is a partnership series with Kanokla hosted at their Kanokla Upstairs Downtown location in Caldwell, KS. Tiger Tech, Spanish, and Motorcycle Rider Safety will be offered at Cowley’s Main Campus in Ark City, KS.

Courses offered are:

Bits & Bites: Androids & iPhone Basics 

Cowley College and Kanokla present the first Bits & Bites: Tech Talk for Everyone class at 9 a.m. on February 3. This is a series of community education classes on bits of technology topics with brunch bites provided. In this Android & iPhone Basics class, participants will learn the basics of Android and iOS for their tablets and cell phones. This will include default apps along with how to install new apps. Sharing of multimedia, camera, and text between apps will be covered. Please bring an Android or Apple (iPad, iPhone, etc.) device to class. 

This class is offered to Golden Tigers for $5 or $10 for general community members. 

Tiger Tech: Computers 101 

This elementary introduction to computers class will help participants to understand basic computer terms, powering on and off, and how to get comfortable using a mouse, keyboard, desktop, and tower. Class will be held in a computer lab, offered by Workforce Alliance of Southcentral Kansas staff. Come join this exciting introductory course. 

The class is four weeks long and meets on Mondays, starting on February 5 at 1 p.m. The cost to attend is $5.

February Spanish 

Whether you've had Spanish classes or are completely new to the language, this class will be a great introduction to the Spanish language. The first in a series of three, this class is geared towards beginners covering pronunciation, numbers, days, months, colors, greetings, and courtesies. Enroll in one month or all three. 

Class begins February 6 at 4 p.m. and runs for four weeks. The cost to attend is $20.

Bits & Bites: Cybersecurity Basics – Help Prevent Fraud & Spam

Cowley College and Kanokla present Bits & Bites: Tech Talk for Everyone, a series of community education classes on bits of technology topics with brunch bites provided. In this Cybersecurity Basics class, participants will learn the basics of cybersecurity. This will include understanding the basic types of viruses, malware, and worms. Various strategies of attacks will be covered (Trojans, Ransomware, Spyware, Adware, Phishing, Mobile Malware, Keyloggers, etc.). This session will cover prevention and how to be safe on the World Wide Web. 

The class is offered at 9 a.m. on February 17 and will be taught by David Hays. This class is offered to Golden Tigers for $5 or $10 for general community members. 

Bits & Bites: Streaming 101

Cowley College and Kanokla present Bits & Bites: Tech Talk for Everyone, a series of community education classes on a variety of technology topics. In this Streaming 101 class, participants will learn the basics of streaming, including on a variety of devices. The options of streaming versus cable are presented. The difference between Smart TVs, Roku, Fire sticks, and Chromecast are covered. A variety of free streaming services are provided, as well as pay options. 

The class will take place at 9 a.m. on February 24 and will be taught by David Hays. This class is offered to Golden Tigers for $5 or $10 for general community members. 

Bits & Bites: Choose Your Own Adventure

Cowley College and Kanokla present Bits & Bites: Tech Talk for Everyone, a series of community education classes on bits of technology topics with brunch bites provided. In this "Choose Your Own Adventure" class, the topic will be determined in advance by the class. Topics of interest may be submitted to wce@cowley.edu ahead of time. Consider this a mystery tech class, as the class will be made up from questions and topics submitted in advance.

The class will be held at 9 a.m. on March 2. This class is offered to Golden Tigers for $5 or $10 for general community members. 

Tiger Tech: Computers 102

This computer class will help participants to learn the basics of composing emails, uploading and downloading attachments, and basic operations of Microsoft Windows, in addition to browsing the internet. Class will be held in a computer lab, offered by Workforce Alliance of Southcentral Kansas staff. Come expand your tech knowledge. The class will be held on Mondays in March, starting March 4 at 1 p.m.. The cost of the class is $5.

March Spanish

Whether you've had Spanish classes or are completely new to the language, this class will be a great introduction to the Spanish language. The second in a series of three, this class is will dive into personal, conversational questions such as age, marital status, children, etc. Enroll in one or all three classes today. The class will be taught by Debra Holman, begins March 5 at 4 p.m., and runs for four weeks. The cost is $20. 

Tiger Tech: Exploring Google Applications

This class will explore the Google Suite applications including Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. Class will be held in a computer lab, offered by Workforce Alliance of Southcentral Kansas staff. Google suites is an excellent free alternative to Microsoft Office- come learn more! The class will be held on Mondays in April, starting April 1 at 1 p.m.. The cost of the class is $5.

Motorcycle Rider Safety – Basic Rider

The Motorcycle Rider Safety – Basic Rider course with Matt Stone is being offered March 15-17, April 5-7, April 19-21, May 17-19, June 7-9, and July 12-14.

In the Basic Rider Course, you will learn risk awareness, acceptance & management; personal protective gear, maintenance, controls & basic riding skill information; and street strategies such as being visible, common riding situations, maximum braking & swerving, special situations, and impairment.

The cost is $300. A payment plan is available with a $50 deposit plus four payments of $62.50, paid every two weeks.
