Honoring the Legacy of William R. (Bill) Docking

Cowley College joins the Arkansas City community in mourning the passing of William R. (Bill) Docking, a dedicated leader, philanthropist, and advocate for education. Bill passed away on March 13, 2025, at the age of 73. His decades of service to Cowley College and the region leave an indelible mark on the institution and the many lives he touched.
Born into a family deeply committed to public service, Bill grew up in Arkansas City, Kansas, after his father, the late Kansas Governor Robert Docking, became CEO of Union State Bank in 1957. Carrying on the family legacy, Bill returned to Arkansas City in 1983 to serve as Chief Executive Officer of Union State Bank, guiding the institution toward future success and cementing its role as a pillar of the community.
A passionate supporter of higher education, Bill was an esteemed member of the Cowley College Foundation’s Board of Directors, dedicating three decades to advancing the college’s mission. Most recently, he and his wife, Judy, played a key role in the realization of the Tyler Technical Education Center, further enhancing opportunities for students pursuing technical and vocational careers.
Bill and Judy Docking’s generosity extended beyond infrastructure; their commitment to educational excellence was exemplified through the establishment of the Bill and Judy Docking Faculty Achievement Award. This prestigious endowment continues to support professional development for faculty, ensuring that generations of educators at Cowley College receive the recognition and resources needed to inspire future leaders.
In recognition of his lasting impact, Cowley College named the William (Bill) R. Docking Dorm in his honor in 1994. His leadership as Chairman of Union State Bank and President, CEO, and Chairman of Docking Bancshares reflected his dedication to fostering growth and opportunity within the community he loved.
A celebration of Bill Docking’s life will be held on March 21, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Cowley College Brown Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Cowley College Foundation or the KU Endowment Association, continuing his legacy of service and support for education.
Cowley College extends its deepest condolences to the Docking family and expresses immense gratitude for Bill’s unwavering commitment to the college and its students. His contributions will be remembered and cherished for generations to come.
