Cowley quiz bowl teams do well at East Regional
Allen County Community College hosted the Eastern Regional Collegiate Quiz Bowl tournament on Saturday, February 17, showcasing the intellectual talents of four participating teams, including Allen Community College, Coffeyville Community College, Cowley College, and Independence.
Since Spencer MacLaughlin and Curtis Bogner were both cast members in Cowley’s play The Importance of Being Earnest, they were unable to attend the tournament, so the original A team decided not to participate since they will be traveling to Chicago Feb. 22-25, after placing first and qualifying for nationals at the prior sectional tournament.
The Cowley C team emerged undefeated with a 5-0 record and was led by freshman Ian Aggson, finishing as the top individual performer.
“The C team is comprised entirely of first-year students and is showing great promise already,” Cowley quiz bowl coach Dianne Flickinger said. “Keep an eye on them as they continue to develop, and expect to see more impressive performances.”
The Cowley B team also performed well, securing four wins and only a single loss to Coffeyville B (210-150), which was a close round until the end. The Cowley B team was led by Laurence Aggson, who placed third out of 28 individuals, while Danny Ball finished fifth.
Despite not securing any wins, the participation of the Cowley D team should be acknowledged as an important part of the overall team unity. Sophomore Demetrios Catlett’s eighth-place finish led the Cowley D team.
Cowley B team members were Laurence Aggson, Danny Ball, Tyson Lazier, Cole Batten, and Aigiza Nasyrova.
Cowley C team members (in photo above) were Ian Aggson, Larry Marczynski, Jillian Stickel, and Kaitlin Schmidt.
Cowley D team members were Demetrios Catlett, Emily Howard, J.R. Batten, Joriz Mandac, and Journey Catlett.
