Cowley Quiz Bowl places 10th at national tournament

Cowley College Quiz Bowl team recently placed 10th out 16 teams at the national championship tournament

Capping another strong season, the Cowley College Quiz Bowl team recently placed 10th out 16 teams at the national championship tournament. The tournament was held over Zoom with Cowley competing at its Wichita Center.

“With the help of Eddie Andreo the Quiz Bowl team was able to use the computer lab that is located at the Wichita campus,” Cowley Quiz Bowl sponsor Dianne Flickinger said. “This let the team still try to have a normal national tournament by traveling somewhere other than just staying in Arkansas City.”

Cowley qualified for nationals back in January in 16th place and moved its way to ninth at one point before losing to Coffeyville in the 11th and final round of the day.

Cowley finished in a tie for 10th place with Coffeyville.

Inver Hills Community College, the top team with an 11-0 record, had only one person (Owen Riley) on the team. The top eight individuals received awards, while Cowley’s Zane Hubble finished in 12th place nationally. The team also supported Hubble by watching him perform the tenor saxophone in the KMEA Intercollegiate concert.

Other Cowley team members were, Jacob Denholm (30th), Shelby Fuqua (43rd), Ilia Belosludtsev (tie for 45th), Shaybree Hanes (tie for 45th), Melissa Henderson (58th).
Prior to nationals, the team wanted to let off some steam and get rid of any nerves for the tournament they were going to being playing in the next day so they did the one thing they could think of: axe throwing.

“The team had lots of fun at Blade & Timber axe throwing where most of us learned how to throw axes for the first time,” Shelby Fuqua said. “Some of us were natural pros while others should have been wearing full body armor the way the axes were going.”

The next day, Saturday February 26, the team got up early and prepared to play other teams across the nation via zoom for the next nine hours. The team celebrated its 10th place finish by going to George’s French Bistro and then to Braum’s for dessert.

“Overall, the team had an eventful weekend and a fun time competing at NAQT nationals,” Flickinger said.

Team standings: (1) Inver Hills; (2tie) Jefferson “A”; (2tie) Chipola “A”; (4) Suffolk County; (5tie) Valencia; (6) Redlands; (7) Lamar-Orange; (8) Northern Virginia; (9) Chipola “B”; (10tie) Coffeyville; (10 tie) Cowley; (12 tie) Garden City; (12tie) Seward County; (14tie) Santa Fe; (14tie) Tallahassee; (14tie) Jefferson “B”.
