Qualifying to compete at the Kansas Collegiate Quiz Bowl State Championship April 29-30 in Salina, the Cowley Collegiate Quiz Bowl team placed third out of six teams. The team was also the recipient of the Sportsmanship trophy.

“Salina Area Technology College has been a fantastic venue and host for the Kansas State Championship,” Cowley Collegiate Quiz Bowl coach Dianne Flickinger said.

Coffeyville Community College went 9-0 on the weekend and placed first, while Garden City (6-3) finished second. Cowley went 4-4 in the competition and placed third ahead of Johnson County (2-6), Neosho County (2-5-1), and Allen County (1-6-1).

First, second, and third-place teams win scholarships funded by the Kansas Collegiate Quiz Bowl paid for by registration fees for the year. The registration fees pay for questions from NAQT, plaques, medals, trophies, and scholarships for students.

Cowley was led by Zane Hubble answering 41 tossup questions and placing fourth out of 24 individuals. Johnson County’s Trenton Elliott was the top individual finisher.
Playing in their final tournament were Cowley sophomores Jacob Denholm (eighth place) and Shelby Fuqua (20th place).

“Shelby will be attending WSU, and Jacob will be attending K-State next fall. We will miss them both immensely,” Flickinger said.

Ilia Belosludtsev (17th place) rounded out Cowley team members at the championship.

Mark Flickinger was one of the three moderators for eight rounds, reading as many as 72 questions per round for 576 questions. Cowley student Todd Ketron kept score as one of three scorekeepers.
