Student works shown during Life Through Word and Lens
Cowley College’s Creative Writing and Mass Communications programs hosted the Life Through Word and Lens showcase with writing portfolios, photography, and film works from this semester’s students. Those who attended could view the works and visit with this year’s students about the programs and their works during the reception. Faculty members Marlys Cervantes, Ryan Doom, and Meg Smith hosted the evening’s event.
“We are so proud of this year’s students and the work they have accomplished,” Cervantes expressed. “The gallery hallway and Wright room were buzzing with creativity and guests enjoying what they saw.”
Writers with portfolios in the showcase were: Maria Luiza (Malu) Coehlo, Alexis Cook, Charles (Jeff) Henderson, Garrick Johnson, Syriah Marque, Aaron (AJ) Medrano, Randolph Rhodd, Daria Shchukina, Slava Sychev, and Eden Williams.
If you missed the event or did not have time to view all of the portfolios, you can find them online at the Mile Marker Review website, with the other online students as well, at milemarkerreview.net.
This year there was a nice surprise when Videographer and Editor Derek Williams allowed Cowley College to premier his Independent film featuring Cowley sophomores Taylor Kilpatrick and Trevor Leggett. Martyrium was both students’ first foray into acting outside of the college setting. Williams operates out of Kansas City, Mo, and shot this film locally over the summer of 2022. He allowed the event to premier the rough cut (unpolished version) to celebrate the talents of two of our own.
Visitors were entertained by the collaborative work of the mass communication and criminal justice programs — the first episode of Cops at Cowley.
The photography showcase featured art by Luke Faulkner, Randolph Rhodd, Amber Daubert, Angel Swallow, and (Malu) Coelho. Photos will hang in the Life Through Word and Lens Gallery through the end of the week. And short films and promotional videos will play on the gallery screen.
Please contact any of the faculty about their programs if you are interested in finding out more about what Cowley College has to offer.
