High School students take part in Art & Design Prodigy Awards at Cowley College
A total of 64 students from six high schools participated in the Art and Design Prodigy Awards held Wednesday at Cowley College’s main campus in Arkansas City.
There were close to 100 pieces of art submitted for the competition.
“We were extremely pleased with the turnout,” Cowley College graphic design instructor Mark Dykes said.
With the return of the event after an absence of the past few years, Dykes said they wanted to try something new - in the afternoon during the time they would normally be reviewing portfolios, they held a "junk art" contest. Employees with the college donated items to use as building materials and while the students waited for their turn for a portfolio review, they got to make sculptures using the donated materials.
“Everyone seemed to have a great time, and it kept everyone busy while they waited for their turn to speak with us about their work,” Dykes said. “We will definitely consider continuing this in the future.”
