Services
Confidential counseling is available at no cost to all currently enrolled Cowley College students and offers support for a wide range of personal, academic, emotional, and behavioral concerns. Whether you're managing stress, adjusting to college life, navigating relationships, or working through anxiety or depression, counseling provides a safe and supportive space to help you move forward.
We use a brief therapy model focused on helping you identify goals, build effective coping strategies, and draw on your own strengths, with services tailored to your individual needs. When specialized or long-term care is needed, we're happy to refer you to trusted providers in your local community.
There are times when counseling with roommates, couples, or small groups can be beneficial. If you are interested in one of these services, please notify Counseling Services when scheduling your appointment so appropriate arrangements can be made.
To participate in roommate, couples, or group counseling, all participants must be currently eligible students or employees of Cowley College.
A consultation is a chance to sit down with a counselor to talk through a concern, learn about available resources, or figure out what kind of support fits best, whether that's a personal issue, helping a friend, working through conflict, or connecting with the right campus or community resource.
Every first appointment begins with a consultation to help determine whether Counseling Services is the right fit for you. This service is open to all Cowley College students, including those taking online courses.
Some students may benefit from services beyond what Counseling Services offers, and when appropriate, we can refer you to community providers for specialized counseling, psychiatric care, medication management, or other behavioral health needs.
While our services are free to Cowley College students, outside providers may charge a fee. We work closely with community partners to help you find quality, affordable care, and cost should never keep you from reaching out.
Counseling Services may provide an initial screening for possible learning differences. This screening is not a formal diagnosis but may help identify concerns that warrant a referral for comprehensive testing with a qualified provider.
Students interested in a screening may schedule an appointment using the same process as any counseling appointment.
If you are experiencing an urgent mental health concern during business hours, please call Counseling Services at 620-441-5228 or the Vice President of Student Affairs at 620-441-5206 to discuss the most appropriate level of care. You are also welcome to stop by the office and request a walk-in appointment. Please let us know if your situation is urgent.
While every effort is made to see students experiencing a crisis as quickly as possible, immediate availability cannot always be guaranteed.
If Counseling Services are unavailable, you may call 988, text 741741, or visit 988lifeline.org or findahelpline.com.
If you are located in Cowley County you can call Four County Mental Health Center at 1-800-499-1748 or visit their office at 22214 D Street, Winfield, KS 67156 to request a walk-in crisis assessment.
If you are experiencing an immediate threat to your safety or someone else, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Counseling Services offers educational workshops and presentations that promote mental health, well-being, resilience, and personal growth throughout the Cowley College community.
Faculty, staff, departments, classes, student organizations, and campus groups at the Arkansas City, Mulvane, and Wellington campuses are welcome to request presentations on topics that meet the needs of their students or employees.
